Working for us
Careers in the Alliance are varied and exciting and provide the opportunity to be part of a truly national endeavour.
BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce and the Ministry of Defence are all well known for being exceptional places to work and highly desirable to candidates.
Due to our unique set-up each Alliance role is recruited by one of the three parties, and as such you will follow their recruitment process and be engaged on their terms and conditions.
Dreadnought is a national endeavour. We are proud to protect our nation for future generations.
Our locations
Barrow-in-Furness
Barrow-In-Furness is where the Alliance HQ office is based – right in the heart of the BAE Systems Submarines site. This site has been undergoing a major £300m+ redevelopment in readiness to accommodate the build of Dreadnought and maintain its proud history of delivering complex submarine programmes.
There is a total of 24 separate redevelopment projects, marking the largest investment in the site since the Devonshire Dock Hall was constructed in the 1980s.
With approximately 11,000 people working across the site as a whole, not only on the Dreadnought programme but other defence-critical programmes such as the Astute Submarine programme, Barrow’s heritage of being at the very heart of military shipbuilding is clearly being continued way into the 2020s and 2030s.
Barrow is located at the cusp of one of the most beautiful parts of the world – the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Lake District.
With breath-taking scenery, a myriad of places to visit and activities to participate in, some of the finest food and drink in the UK – as well as the wonderful Cumbrian Friendliness – it truly is an aspirational location to live and work.
Bristol
MOD Abbey Wood is the headquarters of Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) and the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA).
The SDA was established as a new Executive Agency of the Ministry of Defence (MOD) on 1st April 2018. Abbey Wood is situated to the north-west of Bristol, with an impressive range of on-site facilities including restaurants, a nursery, parking, hairdresser, ATMs, a convenience store and dry-cleaning facilities.
Bristol is a vibrant city with strong links to its shipping heritage. It has very good road and rail links with Abbey Wood only 1 mile from the M32; linking the M4 and M5 motorways. The city of Bath 13 miles to the east is one of only a handful of city-wide World Heritage Sites with its 18th Century architecture and Roman archaeology.
Derby
Rolls-Royce has been at the forefront of engineering in the UK for over 100 years. Derby is where the company started, and where its Submarines business headquarters is based.
Rolls-Royce’s state-of-the-art Apprentice Academy in Derby trains hundreds of apprentices each year, many of whom will join the company or go on to work in its supply chain.
Derby is the UK’s most central city, a great place to soak up culture and a great base to explore nearby Peak District delights. It’s a really friendly place which offers great value for money and is very easy to get around. You’ll feel welcome right from the start.
The Dreadnought programme’s number one strategic priority is to deliver Boat 1, HMS Dreadnought, on time and the following three boats on schedule, to maintain the UK’s national security. This is an incredibly exciting challenge and we have assembled an excellent team of the brightest and best engineers, project managers and procurement experts. There are amazing career opportunities for anyone joining us.Alex McMillan, Dreadnought Alliance Managing Director
